Batman 3 News Update

Last week film buffs were treated to the incredible news that Christoper Nolan would soon be starting “Batman 3,” along with planing a new Superman film. This is all it took for rumors about these projects start flying around faster than a speeding…well you get the point.

Normally Filmdogs is not a news site, but you can expect movie nerds like us to get excited about big projects like this. Therefore we feel we must comment on them.

The site Comicbookmovie.com claims to have been contacted by a reliable source who was kind enough to offer ALOT of interesting rumors about these films, mainly “Batman 3.” They are as follows:

1. Jonathan Nolan and David Groyer will begin screenwriting will begin later this month.

2. The Riddler will be the film’s big bad, and he will uncover the Dark Knight’s identity.

3. Arakam Asylum will have a big role.

4. Like “The Dark Knight” before it the film will feature several villain cameos. You can expect to see the Penguin (who as of late is often in the comics with the Riddler) and a pre-iced Mr. Freeze.

5. Both Barbra Gordon (aka Batgirl) and Dick Grayson (aka Robin) will show up at some point in the film. Although it’s unlikely that they will be costumed.

6. There will be a mention of Metropolis and Lex Luthor in the film. Potentially paving the way for a larger DC universe on film.

Now should everyone reading this believe a single word of what I just wrote? No. It’s early in the pre-production game and I find it hard to believe that so many details would be leaked this soon.

The Riddler is the most obvious choice for the villain, yet Nolan and writer Daivd Groyer have told us in the past they may be dipping much deeper into Batman’s rouge’s gallery this time around.

The likelyhood of cameos is strong and I’ve always thought the Penguin would make a great choice for that type of role. Mr. Freeze, even in Doctor mode is a bigger stretch given the real world tone of the “Nolanverse.” Nolan has also previously said that no mention of Superman will ever make it’s way into these films. Yet, this is something thing could very likely change given the nature of his recent deal.

That brings us to my favorite rumor on this list, which is appearances by the Caper Crusader’s future sidekicks. Consider the Barbra Gordon rumor the least likely of all seeing as how in “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight” Barbra is the credit given to Jim Gordon’s wife. Not to mention the fact that the Commissioner has a son in the Nolan films, not a daughter. If you think these rumors are false then that is your biggest piece of evidence.

[Correction: As pointed out to me in the comments by David Martinez, Jim Gordon does indeed have a daughter in "The Dark Knight" who appears to be around the age of 8 or 9. Her screen credit? Simply "Gordon's daughter." When asked about this in an interview with MTV around the time "The Dark Knight" came out Nolan became coy about answering that question]

[Even if Nolan wouldn't clear things up "Batman Begins" screenwriter David Goyer did, again in an MTV interview. Saying "Yeah. [it is Barbra]” Later adding, “I can’t imagine we would see Batgirl in these iterations, I don’t know that we would get to that place where you would see her.” Well, at least we know she’s there. We’ll just have to wait a while to see how this all turns out.]

As for Dick Grayson being in the movie, I’ve always thought that it would be a terrible idea to put Robin these films. That is until Heath Ledger’s death and the previous sequel plans being snuffed out. Batman is in a very dark place at the end of “The Dark Knight” and who better to bring him back to the light than the very character that accomplishes this is the Comics. Robin was always a great lighthearted foil to Batman and prevented him from crossing the line on numerous occasions. Now I’m not saying we should see a brightly colored Boy Wonder fighting alongside Bats in the film. Maybe Dick Grayson’s character arc could transpire at the end of the movie, not unlike Two-Face’s story line in “TDK.” Nolan has said he wouldn’t come back without a great story and a way to top himself. Well, I think we all can consider Robin Batman’s greatest cinematic challenge.

Agree? Disagree? Who would you like to see in “Batman 3.” Leave you feedback in the comments below.

  • Mr. Edens:

If anyone can do Robin, Nolan can. He’s ingeniously brought significant twists to what we thought about the Batman franchise already. Everyone groaned when they heard Heath Ledger was going to be The Joker originally, but he proved to be perfect for the role, and the academy said so too.

I’d like to see Nolan’s interpretation of some of the “campier” villains (i.e. The Penguin, Mr. Freeze etc.) and see how he brings some realism to these characters.

When I first heard about Scarecrow being a villain in BB I was ecstatic because they weren’t just going back to the same overused pile of villains. But as TDK proved, Joker was brilliantly reforged in a performance that easily rivals Nicholsen’s campy performance (no matter how awesome it is).

Whatever they decide to do, I’ll be supporting Nolan 100%.

  • No way would robin be a good character for Nolans take on the Batman films, these movies are too dark for a light character like robin. As for Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl being in the film I can see that happening seeing as in Nolans films Gordon does have a daughter as she is implied in the first movie and comes out in the end of The Dark Knight when Two face is holding Gordons family hostage (PAY MORE CLOSE ATTENTION MR. WILL)

  • Mr. Will:

I always assumed the child Gordon’s wife is holding is “Batman Begins” was the son in “TDK,” but you are right Sir. See the above correction to the post.

  • Mr. Edens:

Robin could be done, he just hasn’t been done right and he doesn’t need to be done as campy as the series before Nolan’s. It doesn’t mean that it “can’t” be done or Nolan’s version is “too dark”…that’s hogwash.

  • [...] following up his film “Inception” with a sequel to “The Dark Knight.” This news was incredibly exciting for the geek nation. Added to this was the equally mind melting info that [...]

  • Charlie:

I’d like to see Aaron Eckhart’s Two-Face back. Two-Face was a major Batman villian in the comics. Why should he be killed off after a 20 minute skit and the end of a movie?

  • Upsidedownface:

Thats incredible, Movies Online! I totally agree with every fiber of my light beige turtle neck. It actually keeps me up at night, sweating and sticky, stressing over Anime games in the west. I mean, WTF!? We should all pull out our pubic hair and soak our crotches in gas to protest! Via la revolution!!!

  • Film Phantom:

Robin was never a good character in any medium they need to bring in greyson and promote him immediately to Nightwing. I would like to see with the riddler a catwoman played by the chick from the seventies show and extract who’s name escapes me right now.

  • Upsidedownface:

The smokin hot Mila Kunis. Though, she’d likely make it laughable. Don’t forget this isn’t a Joel Shitmaker Batman 3.

  • James:

Nolan has reiterated time and time again that there will be no Robin, Penguin or Mr Freeze. He isn’t one to go back on his word.

  • You wanna know what i think, from the moment i walked out from watchin TDK, i was looking for a replacement for the late Heath Ledger, I had two great actors in focus Josh Hartnet or Joseph Gordon Levitte, and after watching Nolan’s INCEPTION i have without a doubt that JGL will be returning as The JOKER, if you were to put Ledger and Levitte together you would say they were brothers, they look so much like each other. And JGL is a super actor, If you ask me i think Nolan got the idea to cast Ledger as Joker, probably after watching 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU with HL and JGL. The scene with Julia Stiles where she and Heath are playing with paint ball guns, Heath looks alot like the Joker in that scene with his bushey green hair, he even dons a purple blazer in the movie, Any ways getting back to the subject at hand JGL will be in BATMAN 3, but not as the Riddler but the Joker, Think about it JOKER is a great character and i doubt if Nolan will let him off so easy. Even though Nolan has confirmed that he will not bring JOKER back to respect Ledgers proformence, but then again i could be wrong, One thing is sure JGL will be in Batman 3 either as Joker or Riddler,

  • Mr. Will:

I would be inclined to agree with you, but Nolan has recently stated in some interviews that the Joker won’t be returning. Ledger’s version of the character was the definitive Joker.

  • Riddler = Win!:

I could see the riddler working for BM3. In TDK, a character (Coleman Reese, played by Joshua Harto) discovers Batman’s identity, gets bully by the man, and now knows quite abit about our Dark Knight. I could see that twitchy little blonde guy makin’ a boss Riddler.

  • You talked about several interesting points on this page. I came across this by using Bing and I’ve got to confess that I am now subscribed to your blog, it is very fine :)
