“The Night Chronicles” May Become “Unbreakable”
M. Night Shyamalan is producing a trilogy of horror films dubbed The Night Chronicles, with the first entry entitled Devil opening on September 17th. As one can imagine, seeing Shyamalan‘s name on a title card doesn’t inspire much hope of late, but I can not help but be intrigued by the proposed third film of the series. Why? Well, the film now has ties to the (never going to see the light of day) Unbreakable sequel.
Shyamalan has stated many times that he always planned to continue his everyman turned superhero story, with multiple movies exploring David Dunn(Bruce Willis) grappling with his new found “powers”. Though many film fans still hope this movie will happen (and maybe bring Shyamalan back to making good films), the reality of Hollywood would suggest that Unbreakable 2 will never exist. However, in a recent interview with MTV Shyamalan stated that audiences may still get a chance to see what he had in store for a sequel. Check out his comments below.
I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to ‘Unbreakable’ for one of the ‘Night Chronicles’… It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for ‘Unbreakable,’ and it was too much… There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, ‘I’ll make this the second flick.’… I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, ‘This could be a standalone movie. I’ll just say it: the third ‘Night Chronicles’ movie is what would have been the sequel [to 'Unbreakable'].
So there you have it. Although we will never get a true Unbreakable sequel, we will at least get a taste of what could have been. But first… we have to get through Devil and the second film entitled Twelve Strangers.
