Readers of this site know I’m a huge fan of director Peter Weir, so naturally I’m excited to see anything to do with his upcoming epic film, The Way Back. Described as “a fact-based story centered on soldiers who escaped from a Siberian gulag in 1940,” it feels exactly like the kind of sweeping material that only Mr. Weir can handle. Your Poster Is Cool | Never Let Me Go
Mark Romanek’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed novel Never Let Me Go opens in limited release on September 15th, and judging from the film’s trailer Romanek seems to have crafted a very unique dramatic film. Fox Searchlight has recently released three character posters for the film, and although they are merely the actors faces there is something very haunting and poetic about them. Never Let Me Go stars Carey Mulligan (An Education, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Andrew Garfield (The Social Network, Spider-Man Reboot), Keira Knightley (Pride and Prejudice, The Duchess), and is directed by Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo). Your Poster Is Cool | The Tempest
Touchstone Pictures has recently released the poster for Julie Taymor’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and I find it to be a nice representation of what this film may have to offer. Although it utilizes the tired floating head poster design, it establishes a motif for different characters and offers an artful approach to the design. Taymor famously adapted Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus in the revisionist art film Titus, and I’m hoping she brings a level of the creative ambition that was displayed in that film. The Tempest stars Helen Mirren, Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Djimon Hounsou, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, David Strathairn, and opens on December 10, 2010. The famous Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is presenting the 2010 Rolling Roadshow Tour, in which they will be showing “free screening of famous movies in famous places.” To coincide, graphic designer Olly Moss has created nine fantastic posters for the films being shown.
