The Dark Knight | Bank Robbery Prologue

It’s Valentines Day and if you believe in love at first sight then love at first listen shouldn’t be too much of a stretch. It’s truly amazing the impression the first few seconds of a film can leave you with. Just take my previous Batman related Score Your Week as an example. I’ll never forget seeing The Dark Knight in theaters for the first time. It ranks up there with the Star Wars Prequels and Lord of the Rings on my most anticipated films list easily. So, as I sat waiting for the picture to roll I couldn’t help but wonder how it would begin, even if the IMAX prologue had already been released to promote the movie.

Your Poster is Cool | Captain America

Today Marvel released the first poster for Captain America and my initial thoughts are… it’s cool. Although he should let the film speak for itself, director Joe Johnston has been stating in interviews that he is excited for audiences to see what he has in store for the character. If this poster is a glimpse at the overall look and tone of the film, I am excited as well. Continue on for a look at the angst-ridden captain. Read the rest of this entry »

Double Wide Trailer Exam | Perfect Sense and Beginners

One of the best (and criminally overlooked) films of 2010 was Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer. In the film Ewan McGregor plays a writer for hire, who is assigned the task of ghost writing the ex-prime minister’s memoirs. It is an excellent film in every way and instead of repeating myself I will recommend my review here, if you would like to read more. Among all the great things in the film, I was struck by Ewan McGregor’s everyman appeal. He rarely is an action star (although there are three prequels that we need not mention) and usually is playing an intellectual in over his head. In 2011, McGregor will be starring in two very different films; Perfect Sense (a story of two lovers fighting to survive in the wake of an epidemic, co-starring Eva Green) and Beginners (a quirky look at the relationship of a father, Christopher Plummer, and his son). Continue on to check out the fantastic trailers for both films. Read the rest of this entry »

Scene Stealer | “Ed Wood” Bela Lugosi fights the Octopus

After talking about Tim Burton in detail on last night’s show (which will be available for download this week), I had to revisit my favorite film by the director, Ed Wood for this week’s Scene Stealer. There are many great scenes, but I landed on a classic. Proceed!

Score Your Week | The Late Composer John Barry

This morning brought the terrible news that legendary film composer John Barry had passed away. Barry was most famous for his beyond iconic theme for James Bond. He would go on to score 11 of the 007 films. Listen to the main theme below.

Under the Radar | Steven Soderbergh

I have to admit, I was saddened by Steven Soderbergh’s recent (yet coy) announcement that he would be retiring from the filmmaking business. He has four remaining films (Haywire, Contagion, Liberace, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E), but after they are released he will bow out. This is a shame; Soderbergh is a true auteur and a versatile unique voice. Best known by mass audiences for the lavishly fun Ocean’s Trilogy, Soderbergh proves that one can be both an experimental artist and a Hollywood money maker. Continue on for a list of five films by Mr. Soderbergh that aren’t talked about nearly enough. Read the rest of this entry »

Scene Stealer | The Social Network “Opening”

Much has been said about David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin‘s The Social Network and rightfully so, it’s one of the most perfect films I’ve ever seen. Since purchasing the Blu-Ray I’ve consumed every special feature like an addict, with only the cast commentary left for my enjoyment. One of the more interesting aspects of the disc is the behind the scenes footage of director Fincher and writer Sorkin discussing elements of the script, and analyzing every detail of plot/character. One would think that the two such creatively strong minded people wouldn’t get along without butting heads, yet the result is on screen, and it’s beautiful to watch.

Review/Score Your Week | Animal Kingdom

In this edition of Score Your Week not only will I be featuring music from one of my favorite films of 2010, I will be offering a mini-review in hopes of encouraging as many people as possible to seek it out.  The film is David Michôds Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom.

Animal Kingdom is the type of film that sneaks up on you. Watching the slow burn thriller unfold before your eyes, keeps the mind going and the heart pounding. Once the final image smash cuts to black and composer Antony Partos‘ score pours out, the greatness becomes apparent. Continue on for a taste of that greatness and why Partos’ music adds to it.
