Score Your Week

The Dark Knight | Bank Robbery Prologue

It’s Valentines Day and if you believe in love at first sight then love at first listen shouldn’t be too much of a stretch. It’s truly amazing the impression the first few seconds of a film can leave you with. Just take my previous Batman related Score Your Week as an example. I’ll never forget seeing The Dark Knight in theaters for the first time. It ranks up there with the Star Wars Prequels and Lord of the Rings on my most anticipated films list easily. So, as I sat waiting for the picture to roll I couldn’t help but wonder how it would begin, even if the IMAX prologue had already been released to promote the movie.

Score Your Week | The Late Composer John Barry

This morning brought the terrible news that legendary film composer John Barry had passed away. Barry was most famous for his beyond iconic theme for James Bond. He would go on to score 11 of the 007 films. Listen to the main theme below.

Review/Score Your Week | Animal Kingdom

In this edition of Score Your Week not only will I be featuring music from one of my favorite films of 2010, I will be offering a mini-review in hopes of encouraging as many people as possible to seek it out.  The film is David Michôds Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom.

Animal Kingdom is the type of film that sneaks up on you. Watching the slow burn thriller unfold before your eyes, keeps the mind going and the heart pounding. Once the final image smash cuts to black and composer Antony Partos‘ score pours out, the greatness becomes apparent. Continue on for a taste of that greatness and why Partos’ music adds to it. Score Your Week | “Jackie Brown” Opening Credits Sequence

The 70s funk-fused soundtrack from 1997′s Jackie Brown is killer to say the least. One track sticks with me to this day and it’s from the opening sequence. Proceed to get your funk on!

Score Your Week | Batman “Theme”

After reading a seemingly bogus plot summary for the 3rd film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises this morning my thoughts were aflutter with The Caped Crusader. Tim Burton’s 1989 movie Batman was the 2nd film I ever remember seeing, after that summer’s earlier Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I was four years old, but I still remember vividly the opening of the picture like it were yesterday. The camera pans over a sharp and foreboding structure as the music of Burton’s frequent collaborator, composer Danny Elfman kicks in…

Score Your Week | The Departed

When one thinks of the soundtrack to The Departed, I’m sure The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” or The Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” are two songs that are instantly thought of. Both serve as great theme songs for the violence, corruption, swagger and attitude the film serves us. However, for me it is the great Howard Shore that truly shines with unique tracks that are not flashy , but command your attention. Read the rest of this entry »

Score Your Week | Up “Seizing The Spirit of Adventure”

The Oscar winning score from Up has enough great tracks on it to last a few months on Score Your Week, but there’s one track that just gets me on the edge of my seat every time. Read on!

Score Your Week | Elf “Buddy’s Orgin”

Please forgive me, this Score Your Week was a few days late due to holiday travel. Where was I going? Well, “I passed through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops..

Score Your Week | Taxi Driver

With Taxi Driver, Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader crafted a film that flexes every muscle of cinematic greatness. Our lone (anti) hero, Travis Bickle, cruises a wasteland that he calls home. Disgusted by the trash and debris, he takes it upon himself to clean up the streets and wash away the filth. He is clearly a sociopath and possibly psychotic, but in his eyes he is doing us all a favor. Guiding Travis on his conquest is Bernard Herrmann’s fantastic score. Read the rest of this entry »
