Here at Filmdogs, we have a bit of a love hate relationship with Michael Cera. Although he has proven to filmgoers that he has talent, the jury still seems to be out on his cinematic range. I, for one, thought he was very good in Arrested Development, Superbad, and Youth and Revolt, while also acknowledging that he was completely underwhelming and unfunny in both Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist and Year One. That said, one thing that Filmdogs definitely agrees on is that Cera brought his “A” game and more to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Well, now we can get a look at some of the films that inspire Michael Cera, and I must say he has good taste. Intervals of Awesome originally posted the list which features some Kurosawa, Scorsese, and Anderson (Wes and P.T.). Continue on to check out the list.

Hollywood loves to shell out similar films in a given year, (Dante’s Peak and Volcano, Deep Impact and Armageddon) and 2010 is no exception. This year the old school action team-up made a comeback with movies like, The Losers, The A-Team, and The Expendables with varying results. So, I thought it would be in fitting with the spirit of those films to pit them against one another, and see which one comes out on top. Here are the 2010 action team-up awards. Steroids are encouraged.

Piranha 3D delivers on what it promises better than any movie I’ve seen this year. It knows exactly what it is, and what you the audience wants from this type of B picture. I even had to create a special split rating for the movie in light of it’s insanity. However, you might be thinking you could just watch the equivalent of this film on the SyFy Channel. Well, you are both right and so, so wrong. So here is list of reasons why you should see this movie in theaters, and a list outlining why you should stay as far away as possible. I’ll leave the final choice up to you.

Today is our Independence Day, and what better to celebrate this most American of days than by showing you some of the best 4th of July scenes in movie history. I think you’ll agree that when it comes to American ideals, Hollywood has it covered. On screen at least.
Number 5: The Sandlot - Night-ball

The Sandlot is a great family film that captures many more aspects of Americana than just this 4th of July scene, in which the kids use fireworks to light the only game of night-ball they can play all year. The simple looks of wonder on their faces is priceless as they watch sky light up. A perfect rendering of what the 4th means to kids. (more…)

With Ridley Scott’s newest film Robin Hood opening this weekend, I decided to create a personal top five list of his films. I believe that Ridley Scott is a brilliant filmmaker and an impressive world builder. His presence can always be felt in his films through his visual style and iconic imagery. He usually tackles complicated stories with deep themes and meanings. At times his films falter and some could argue that he has had three late decade slumps (1989 – Black Rain, 1996/97 – White Squall and G.I. Jane, 2006 – A Good Year). That said, Ridley Scott is immensely talented and will always execute his films with absolute perfection. (more…)

With Green Zone opening this weekend, I found it appropriate to profile the film’s star… Matt Damon. Matt Damon is an amazing actor who gets better with every role. I really do think he is one of the best actors (if not THE best) of his generation. He has played a wide variety of different characters, all the while bringing charisma and charm. He has been many things: an existential action star, a brilliant mind trapped in a thug’s body, a double crossing rat, a fat dopey whistle blower, a solider deciding who he fights next to are his brothers. He is all these things and so much more. Damon has taken us down an exciting road, and he isn’t stopping anytime soon. The following performances are my personal top 10. If I miss some of your favorites, please feel free to post them in the comments section. (more…)

In lieu of Valentine’s Day and all its commercialism, I decided to start my Filmdogs career with a top ten list. This list pertains to movies I feel show love at its true core. A love film to me isn’t the romantic comedy that Hollywood loves shoveling out. Love exists in numerous different ways, be it a father dying from cancer trying to connect with his son, a lonely figure longing for something he’s unsure of, sharing a passion for music, or that one and only someone you know you can’t live without. It’s a special bond and experience you share with another being. This list is comprised of those films which “I” feel showcases that fact. If you have the chance, I highly recommend you go rent one of these movies and watch them tonight with your special someone. So without further ado, here is my “Love” Film Top 10:
