Trailer Exam

Double Wide Trailer Exam | Blue Valentine and All Good Things

Ryan Gosling is an amazing actor. In 2006 he became a thespian of Marlon Brando proportions with his turn in Half Nelson. In 2007 he gave one of the best performances of the year as Lars Lindstrom in Lars and the Real Girl, but has been absent from the big screen since. However, he is returning this year with two very different films entitled Blue Valentine and All Good Things. Both films seem to contain great supporting performances as well, with Blue Valentine co-starring Michelle Williams and All Good Things co-starring Kirsten Dunst. Out of the two, however, Blue Valentine seems to be the must see, as All Good Things looks like a dime a dozen thriller. Continue on to read the synopsis and watch the trailers for both films.

New Trailer | “127 Hours” Trailer 2

Not long ago we featured the first trailer for Danny Boyle‘s highly anticipated 127 Hours. Starring James Franco, 127 Hours chronicles the true story of Aron Ralston and his attempt to free himself after being pinned by a rock. The first trailer was full of Boyle’s trademark kinetic style and looked to be one of the most promising films of the year. Now, Fox Searchlight has released a second trailer showing us more of what the film has to offer. The trailer keeps up with the energy of the first teaser, but really kicks into emotional high gear towards the end. If you had any doubt that this movie wouldn’t be a tough ride, this trailer will show you a glimpse of the places it is going. Can not wait for this one. 127 Hours opens on November 5th.

Trailer Exam | The Tempest

A while back we showcased the poster for Julie Taymor’s adaptation of William Shakespeare‘s The Tempest. It was a beautiful work of art that both dazzled and gave a feel for the film. Apple has recently premiered the trailer and I must say I am a little torn. On one hand the trailer is filled with gorgeous imagery and of course it is a fantastic story, but the fact that the trailer is so tonally all over the place really bothers me. I understand that the play has many comedic acts undercutting dramatic tension, but the trailer presents it in an extremely jarring matter. That said there is some interesting visuals and a fantastic cast. Check out the synopsis and trailer below. The Tempest opens on December 10, 2010.

In her big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s mystical thriller “The Tempest,” Academy Award(R)-nominated Julie Taymor (“Across the Universe,” “Frida,” “Titus”) brings an original dynamic to the story by changing the gender of the sorcerer Prospero into the sorceress Prospera, portrayed by Oscar(R) winner Helen Mirren (“The Queen”). Prospera’s journey spirals through vengeance to forgiveness as she reigns over a magical island, cares for her young daughter, Miranda, and unleashes her powers against shipwrecked enemies in this exciting, masterly mix of romance, tragicomedy and the supernatural.

The Trailer for the Most Important Film of our Time | The Troll Hunter

This trailer for the Norwegian mock mockumentary The Troll Hunter looks like a gigantic dose of fun. The flick comes from director Andre Ovredal, and follows a team of experts trying to expose a mass coverup of the presence of Trolls living amongst the Norwegian people. The preview looks to have an excellent sense of humor, especially the line about the beasts being able to sniff out the Christians among us. Plus, the special effects and the creatures themselves look pretty good. Check out the trailer below which debuted earlier at Twitch.

Trailer Exam | The Coen Brothers’ True Grit

Apple has released the trailer for Joel and Ethan Coen‘s upcoming adaptation/remake of True Grit, and it is a amazing spectacle. Running only a minute long, the trailer is the perfect taste of what is to come. It sets up the story with a sure hand and allows us to be thrust into the amazing images photographed by Coen regular Roger Deakins. The film stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Hailee Steinfeld, and opens on December 25, 2010. Check out the trailer below.

Trailer Exam | The King’s Speech

Colin Firth as King George VI.

When I first heard that the period piece The King’s Speech had won the top prize at the Toronto Film Festival and was now a top Oscar contender I rolled my eyes. Haven’t we seen enough of these types of films take home awards? Well, after I watched this amazing trailer I quickly regretted those feelings. First read the synopsis from Imdb: Read the rest of this entry »

Trailer Exam | Red Hill

Red Hill is a Australian neo-western with no big names and a notably light marketing push. This is a shame because the trailer for the film is extremely promising. Not in a masterpiece kind of way, but in a well shot, gritty, blood splattering, revenge flick kind of way. The film follows Shane Cooper, a young cop who has to bring down a sadistic killer on his first day of work. The trailer echos No Country For Old Men and The Proposition, but also brings an atmospheric style of it’s own. Red Hill stars Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and opens on November 5, 2010. Check out the trailer below and continue on for the film’s very epic teaser trailer.

Trailer Exam | 127 Hours

Apple just released the trailer for Danny Boyle‘s new film 127 Hours which tells the true story of Aron Ralston, who had to amputate his own arm after a hiking accident. The movie is another re-teaming of Boyle and his screenwriter Simon Beaufoy. Both having recently won Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire.

Double Wide Trailer Exam | “How Do You Know” and “Daydream Nation”

Paul Rudd in How Do You Know and Kat Dennings in Daydream Nation

How Do You Know is the new film by James L. Brooks, and I must say I am only mildly interested in it judging by this trailer. Brooks has some really great films (Broadcast News, As Good as it Gets, Spanglish), but they all had a little more to offer than your average rom com. How Do You Know seems to be treading some familiar water, but it does have a great cast and maybe Brooks isn’t showing us everything. The film stars Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson, Jack Nicholson and opens December 17, 2010.

Daydream Nation is an independent film that is premiering at the Toronto Film Festival and though I know next to nothing about the film, I must say the trailer is extremely enticing. It is filled with smash cuts and great music, but it also hides behind them. This could go either way because it is no secret that a trailer can make a bad movie look good; all it has to do is showcase great editing and music. Regardless of how the film turns out, the trailer for Daydream Nation is still worth checking out. Continue on to do so. Read the rest of this entry »

Trailer Exam | Woody Allen’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger

I unabashedly love the work of writer/director/actor Woody Allen. I have seen 35 of his 44 films and though many of his works have problems, I can always find at least one thing to latch onto. As a filmmaker, Woody Allen is constantly challenging me to except characters that are (somewhat) morally reprehensible and look at his familiar story lines and motifs with different eyes. Many film fans could site a handful of his films that they are not a fan of, but I feel that he goes on creative streaks that are only matched by a few. Most recently with Melinda and Melinda, Match Point, Cassandra’s Dream, and Vicky Christina Barcelona. Whatever Works had its moments, but I can honestly say that it was an extremely uneven film. Luckily Mr. Allen puts out a film a year and is back once again with his European comedic romance You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. I have to admit that although I am excited for his new film, I find this trailer a little bit off. It neither has the big laughs of his earlier work, the somberness of films like Match Point and Interiors, the sexiness off Vicky Christina Barcelona, or the greatness of his masterpieces(Manhattan, Annie Hall, Crimes and Misdemeanors). It does however boast a fantastic cast and I will hold judgment until I see the film for myself. You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger stars Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Gemma Jones, Freida Pinto, Lucy Punch, Naomi Watts and opens September 22, 2010. Check out the trailer below.
