Cinematic TV | Behind the Scenes of The Walking Dead

This Halloween AMC launches it’s newest original series, The Walking Dead. Although news of the show has been notably absent from Filmdogs, I can assure you this is a project we are very much looking forward to checking out. With great creative talent involved such as Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist), The Walking Dead could possibly prove to be yet another critical hit for AMC. Hopefully the show will also bring a wider audience to the channel, allowing the general public to get in on the Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Rubicon bandwagon. Continue on to check out a new behind the scenes look at The Walking Dead, as well as the trailer, synopsis, and some great posters for the show.

Cinematic TV | Review of Boardwalk Empire Episode 1.1

Boardwalk Empire is not Martin Scorsese’s first foray into episodic television (he previously directed a campy/creepy episode of Spielberg’s 1985 series Amazing Stories entitled, “Mirror, Mirror”), but it is the first time he is able to put his cinematic stamp on a show. Teaming up with HBO and show runner Terence Winter, Scorsese introduces us to the world of 1920s Atlantic City. A land of gangsters, jazz, and prohibition. Judging by this first episode, I feel that Boardwalk Empire may have the ability to do the impossible and rank with HBO greats, The Sopranos and Deadwood. Read the rest of this entry »

The Dark Tower to become Motion Picture Trilogy and Television Series

Stephen King‘s sci-fi, fantasy, western, horror, epic The Dark Tower series has finally found a cinematic shepherd in Universal and Ron Howard. The series (beloved by so many King fans) has been looking for a movie going lift off for some time. Lost creators J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof were attached at one point (they left after finding the project to be to vast) and were then followed by Imagine Entertainment partners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, along with writer/producer Akiva Goldsman. The team has recently announced what they have in store for the saga, and I must say it is beyond ambitious.

Geek Round Up | ESPN and Admiral Ackbar’s TV Commercial

The fish, the myth, the legend.

geek
Slang.
1. A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest.

2. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.

3. A carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

You may remember an article from a few months back concerning Star Wars fishy Rebel leader Admiral Ackbar being petitioned by students at the University of  Mississippi to become their new mascot. Ackbar would have replaced the school’s older, and a little too southern icon, Colonel Reb. Read the rest of this entry »

Score Your Week | Lost Season 1

At the beginning of the week here at Filmdogs, a member of the pack will be offering a recommendation for a soundtrack to help you speed up those never ending work days and (if possible) inspire you.

One of my most fulfilling cinematic moments of 2010 was watching the bone white text appear one last time at the end of my favorite show, LOST. It was an astonishing moment for me to look back at six years with these characters and their journey, and finally find closure. Luckily I will be able to relive what I could consider to be my favorite film of 2010 once again, as the final season hits dvd this Tuesday. In honor of this fantastic week I will be spotlighting one of the most important characters of Lost, Michael Giacchino’s music. Giacchino has produced some of the best and most interesting scores of late including Star Trek, Fringe, The Incredibles, and his oscar winning score for Up, but it is with Lost that he really made his mark. From screeching horns to piano ballads, Giacchino helped usher along every emotion that the show had to offer.

Comic Con Round Up | News & Trailers

Dr. McCoy himself Karl Urban has been confirmed to play Judge Dredd in an upcoming reboot. I know next to nothing about this character, but Urban is a fantastic actor and it will be great to see in him a lead role, sort of:

If anyone is familiar with Dredd, over the years there are many times when Dredd removes his helmet but you never fully see his face and that was construct by the creator, Mr. Wagner. He represents that faceless system of justice and law. I will say this, hypothetically if I went to a movie that was called “Judge Dredd” and the character or the actor who played Judge Dredd took the helmet and I would see his full face and features I would puke in my popcorn because that’s not Dredd. He’s mysterious and enigmatic. We’re going to do it right.

Here’s the trailer for Dexter season 5. I can’t wait! Read the rest of this entry »

Casting Updates from Bale, Law, Scre4m & Glee

Christian Bale and Zach Synder

Word is that Christian Bale is set to star in The Last Photograph, with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo director Sergey Bodrov set to helm the picture. The idea for the story apparently comes from Zach Synder (300, Watchmen) and is described as follows:

[the plot] revolves around a photograph that becomes the catalyst for a journey two men undertake through war-torn Afghanistan.

Bale will follow up the film with the next picture from director Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, A New World) supposedly a love story. Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams, and Olga Kurylenko are said to co-star. Read the rest of this entry »

Next on HBO | Trailer for fantasy series “Game of Thrones”

Sean Bean in "Game of Thrones"

Sean Bean is one of my favorite supporting actors. His turns in movies like Patriot Games, Goldeneye, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring have always made me want to see him in a decent leading role. Well, it looks like HBO’s new fantasy series Game of Thrones based on the novels by George R. R. Martin is that starring vehicle. Read the rest of this entry »

Tom Cruise’s “Tropic Thunder” Producer is Back

Anyone who had seen the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder, about a bunch of zany actors caught in a real battle while filming a Vietnam flick, will surely remember foulmouthed producer Les Grossman. Grossman, played by Tom Cruise in a fat suit was an inspired performance, one that many thought revitalized his career. Well, now fans of Grossman will be happy to hear that he is “producing” this years MTV Movie Awards live while Parks and Recreation actor Aziz Ansari will host. Just check out these promos for the show which feature Grossman giving a young Tom Cruise and Robert Pattinson words of advice. The show airs June 6th. Read the rest of this entry »
