Oscar Winners

Overall, this years awards went down as expected and were kind of bland. I kept hoping for an upset, but the biggest one I got was Geoffrey Fletcher winning Best Adapated Screeplay for Precious over Jason Reitman’s script for Up in the Air. It was cool seeing Kathryn Bigelow become the first woman to win in the directing category. Dito, as for seeing “The Dude” himself, Jeff Bridges, win for Crazy Heart. The Hurt Locker had a big night sweeping all the major awards including Best Picture. For me though the best part of the entire show was the cutting of the Best Original Song performances from the telecast. Here’s hoping that change is here to stay. See all the winners below in bold.

You did What?

The Oscar race is getting dirty. According to the excellent film blog Deadline.com one of the producers of the Best Picture frontrunner “The Hurt Locker” (Nicolas Chartier) has been sending out dirty emails to Academy voters. The message: Don’t vote for “Avatar.” Now, the Oscars have always been about politics as much as filmmaking, just look to the Weinstein brothers for conformation. Yet, this form of cheating seems to take things to a new low. Read the email below. Read the rest of this entry »

Oscar Reviews: 2010 Animated Short Films

Which short will win this Golden Boy?

When I heard a local theater was playing the Oscar nominated animated shorts this morning I jumped at the chance to see these films. It’s nice to be able to have an opinion on this subject for once plus, I got to see a new Wallace and Gromit flick. Most of these movies play out as you would expect, yet the last film on the list is missed opportunity at greatness. Frustrating to say the least.

Here are my thoughts on the this years Oscar nominated animated short films. Read the rest of this entry »
