Life’s a Bitch (And Then You Die): Oscar Review of “A Serious Man”

One of the most interesting film experiences I had in 2009, was brought to me by none other than Joel and Ethan Coen. Now, the Coens are no strangers to Oscar gold. In 1996 they won for best original screenplay for “Fargo“, and in 2007 they struck gold in a big way for their masterpiece “No Country For Old Men”. Well they are back in the running again with their most odd ball work of art since “Barton Fink”.

“The Hurt Locker” playing dirty in the Oscar race?

You did What?

The Oscar race is getting dirty. According to the excellent film blog Deadline.com one of the producers of the Best Picture frontrunner “The Hurt Locker” (Nicolas Chartier) has been sending out dirty emails to Academy voters. The message: Don’t vote for “Avatar.” Now, the Oscars have always been about politics as much as filmmaking, just look to the Weinstein brothers for conformation. Oscar Reviews: 2010 Animated Short Films

Which short will win this Golden Boy?

When I heard a local theater was playing the Oscar nominated animated shorts this morning I jumped at the chance to see these films. It’s nice to be able to have an opinion on this subject for once plus, I got to see a new Wallace and Gromit flick. Most of these movies play out as you would expect, yet the last film on the list is missed opportunity at greatness. Frustrating to say the least.

The BAFTAs or Oscars with an Accent

It's the Oscar you can wear

“The Hurt Locker” took home all the big prizes at this years BAFTAs, the British version of the Oscars. Kathryn Bigelow added another notch to her belt on her quest to become the first female director to win a Academy Award by taking the Best Director prize. The film also took home Best Film and Original Screenplay while “Avatar” was snubbed in all the major categories.

Now wether or not these awards are a good indicator of the Oscars remains to be seen, but Bigelow is looking more and more like a sure thing. Especially after winning Best Director at the Directors Guild the other day. Check out her acceptance speech below. Read the rest of this entry »
