Oscar Week Movie of the Day | Training Day

With the 83rd Annual Academy Awards quickly approaching, I will be offering Filmdog’s Oscar countdown by recommending a film every day of the week up until the awards this Sunday. Top Five Ridley Scott Films

With Ridley Scott’s newest film Robin Hood opening this weekend, I decided to create a personal top five list of his films. I believe that Ridley Scott is a brilliant filmmaker and an impressive world builder. His presence can always be felt in his films through his visual style and iconic imagery. He usually tackles complicated stories with deep themes and meanings. At times his films falter and some could argue that he has had three late decade slumps (1989 – Black Rain, 1996/97 – White Squall and G.I. Jane, 2006 – A Good Year). Cops on the Edge…of Boredom | Review of “Brooklyn’s Finest”

Brooklyn’s Finest is the latest in a recent string of films about “cops on the edge” to try it’s hand at entertaining the masses. Remember Street Kings, Pride and Glory, or We Own the Night? Me neither, yet I still hope for the glory days of the 70s when films in this genre seemed fresh and unique. Well, it’s time I accepted the fact that those days are over. Especially after the great waste of cinematic talent that is Brooklyn’s Finest.

The film features the three most cliched cop storylines available to screenwriters:

1. Ethan Hawke is the cop on the take, simply trying to provide for his family.

2. Richard Gere is the burnt out veteran with only a week left until retirement.

3. Don Cheadle is an undercover officer who’s in too deep…

Will they do the right thing and be a good cop? At a run time of 2 hours and 13 minutes in length I wish they had answered this question before the guy sitting in front of me started snoring… Read the rest of this entry »
