Oscar Review | How “Precious” life can be

I won’t lie. I wasn’t looking forward to watching “Precious.” The trailer for this film looked like an urban nightmare, and i’m not usually one to shy away from dramatic flicks. Yet, I couldn’t help but be taken in by this films power. Director Lee Daniels has created a stylish and beautiful ode to all the put upon inner city teens of this nation. It is a wonder to behold. Geek Round Up | “Avatar 2″ Title?

Cameron dishes on the title of his "Avatar" sequel

geek
Slang.
1. A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest.

2. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.

3. A carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

Geek Round Up is a new Filmdogs column celebrating the best geeky filmic news. Basically anything that incites us geeks to push our glasses up the bridge of our nose, and lean closer to our computer screens with excitement. So, let’s do just that.

A2: Judgment Day? Not exactly. James Cameron has recently stated that it wouldn’t make much sense to the highly anticipated sequel Avartar 2.

“The Hurt Locker” playing dirty in the Oscar race?

You did What?

The Oscar race is getting dirty. According to the excellent film blog Deadline.com one of the producers of the Best Picture frontrunner “The Hurt Locker” (Nicolas Chartier) has been sending out dirty emails to Academy voters. The message: Don’t vote for “Avatar.” Now, the Oscars have always been about politics as much as filmmaking, just look to the Weinstein brothers for conformation. Yet, this form of cheating seems to take things to a new low. Read the email below. Read the rest of this entry »

The BAFTAs or Oscars with an Accent

It's the Oscar you can wear

“The Hurt Locker” took home all the big prizes at this years BAFTAs, the British version of the Oscars. Kathryn Bigelow added another notch to her belt on her quest to become the first female director to win a Academy Award by taking the Best Director prize. The film also took home Best Film and Original Screenplay while “Avatar” was snubbed in all the major categories.

Now wether or not these awards are a good indicator of the Oscars remains to be seen, but Bigelow is looking more and more like a sure thing. Especially after winning Best Director at the Directors Guild the other day. Check out her acceptance speech below. Read the rest of this entry »

My top 50 films of the past decade

I’ll always look back on this past decade in film as the one in which I as a film junkie plunged head first into the world of cinema. In 2000 “Gladiator” became the blueprint to which all other films in the following decade would have to live up too. Granted I was 16 at the time and could only hope to live a life interesting as Maximus. Read the rest of this entry »
