Norway is very mysterious | Review: “The Troll Hunter”

Once again, my cable provider surprises me with a movie I’ve been wanting to see, well before, it arrives in the theater. AND it’s a film that sure as hell won’t be in any theater near my ass any time soon. That is The Troll Hunter, directed by André Øvredal. Commence with reading!

The Filmdogs Podcast: Episode 34 – The Lord of the Podcasts
The 34th Episode of The Filmdogs Podcast is here and it’s epic to say the least. First up is the News in which we tackle the latest casting announcements for The Hobbit, and casting rumors for the female leads in The Dark Knight Rises. In “Vs.” we continue to earn our geek cred as it’s an epic battle for best film in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Next, we discuss our favorite Up and Coming Directors in our “Featured Topic of the Week” and lastly we have a “One Liner of the Week” from Rian Johnson’s High School Noir, Brick. It’s an episode so powerful you may have to throw it in Mt. Doom.

So, are there going to be monsters in this movie about monsters? | Review: “Monsters”
As I was flipping through my options on my cable provider’s On-Demand selection, I was pleasantly surprised to see Monsters on the list, even though it hasn’t even went into the theaters yet. Somehow the cable company gets more “indie” flicks on their pay-per-view lists and while I’m not complaining, it just seems weird…like these films are getting cheated out of a theatrical debut. Anyway, here’s my review.
Oscar Winners
Overall, this years awards went down as expected and were kind of bland. I kept hoping for an upset, but the biggest one I got was Geoffrey Fletcher winning Best Adapated Screeplay for Precious over Jason Reitman’s script for Up in the Air. It was cool seeing Kathryn Bigelow become the first woman to win in the directing category. Dito, as for seeing “The Dude” himself, Jeff Bridges, win for Crazy Heart. The Hurt Locker had a big night sweeping all the major awards including Best Picture. For me though the best part of the entire show was the cutting of the Best Original Song performances from the telecast. Here’s hoping that change is here to stay. See all the winners below in bold.

The Slums of Johannesburg: Oscar Review of “District 9″
Fifteen years ago…no maybe seven years ago, we would have never seen District 9 nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. The Oscars have come a long way in recognizing the fantasy and science fiction genres in the same light with all the high dramas that they typically think only deserve the greatest of film making awards. I hope that one day, there will be no difference between the greatest drama and the greatest sci-fi/fantasy film in the opinion of the academy.
