Commentary Commentary | The Last of the Mohicans

My list of ten favorite filmmakers is constantly changing. There are, however, a handful of directors that will always stay put, and Michael Mann is in this category. Although he is mainly known as the “crime filmmaker”, his style is vibrantly unique using imagery and music in ways that create beautiful atmosphere and breathtaking drama. I find it to be a cinematic gift when Michael Mann gives even the slightest glimpse into his creative process, and that is one of the many reasons Fox’s newly released Blu Ray for The Last of the Mohicans is a worthy upgrade for fans. Why directing Wolverine 2 isn’t a good idea for an established director.

Yawn...

When in the hands of a great director a comic book franchise can transcend it’s genre. Look no further than Christopher Nolan’s classic The Dark Knight for proof of such. Unfortunately, most of the time these properties don’t turn out the way fans hoped they would. The later X-Men films are good example of rushed productions, bad scripts, and studio interference. While Brett Ratner’s X-Men 3 was bad, the schlockiness really came to a head with the laughable X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The movie may be regarded as completely terrible by most sentient beings, but general love of the character Wolverine was enough to put butts in the seats. The film made $373,062,864 million worldwide, a sequel was greenlit, and the search for director to helm it has begun.

Money Sleeps Until Fall | Oliver Stone

It was just officially announced that director Oliver Stone’s follow up to his 1987 film Wall Street, entitled Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, will be pushed back from it’s summer release date to September 24th. This usually gets people talking about how horrible the film must be, but there could be numerous reasons that such a thing took place. I think the most obvious reason is 20th Century Fox probably thinks that pitting a drama heavy film against huge blockbusters may not be the way to go. I wouldn’t be surprised if the studio is planning an Oscar campaign for Michael Douglas as well. Douglas has already received an Oscar for his original portrayal of the character, and I’m sure a great many are interested to see what he has to offer a second time around.
