Geek Round Up | The Hobbit Greenlit, with PJ at the Helm!!

geek
Slang.
1. A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest.

2. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.

3. A carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

Well, the time has finally come. Director Peter Jackson and Warner Bros/MGM have reached a deal for the highly anticipated pair of Hobbit films to start filming in February. I personally thought this would never happen after all the financial problems with MGM, and messes with Guillermo Del Toro and labor issues. The true triumph here is that Peter Jackson is returning to direct both Hobbit movies, the first to be released in December 2012 and the second in December 2013. It hardly seems like ten years since Lord of the Rings does it?

While some of the labor problems still need to be ironed out, it looks like things are moving full steam ahead for the pictures. Consider geeks everywhere to be extremely excited.

Peter Jackson will direct The Hobbit!!!!

The man for middle earth.

[UPDATE Although Deadline still stands behind it's report, other sites seem unwilling to call in favor of Jackson just yet. See this article at fansite theonering.net.]

According to the website Deadline, who reported that Jackson had been in negotiations to direct the two Hobbit films earlier today, it would now appear as if that is indeed the case. Peter Jackson had been cautious about taking on the movies recently after the departure of Guillermo Del Toro saying that he would direct the films if he had too. Yet, after Jackson scheduled upcoming casting meetings things started to look more promising for the Tolkien faithful. Not to mention that although other directors (David Yates and Neill Blomkamp) had been rumored, no offers had been made. It would seem as if Jackson was making up his mind about helming the project he had distanced himself from for years. I just hope that his heart is in the right place.

When will The Hobbit happen? Well, now that Jackson has committed it would seem as if MGM is more wiling to put up the money for the pair of flicks despite their financial troubles, and who can blame them? Again Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are going to London and L.A. at the beginning of July to look at the best casting prospects. Pre-production hadn’t stopped on the films since Del Toro left so hopefully the movies are still on track for a 2012 and 2013 release schedule.

Here’s hoping for a statement from PJ himself on the matter soon.

Guillermo Del Toro is leaving Middle Earth

Directors Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro.

Director Guillermo Del Toro is leaving The Hobbit, and geeks worldwide are heartbroken. After his comments a few days ago that he would be starting other projects given the delays, this shouldn’t be as much of a surprise. However, it still comes as a shock. MGM’s financial troubles have been pushing back the project for several months now, and many have wondered if the film would ever get off the ground. Del Toro has been working in New Zealand on the project for the last two years with Producer Peter Jackson and writers Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh. He apparently felt as if he couldn’t commit any more time to the two Hobbit films when their status was still up in the air. Read the rest of this entry »
