Scene Stealer | “I Heart Huckabees” How am I not myself?
Director David O. Russell recently wowed me to no end with the craftsmanship presented in his newest film, The Fighter. With an expert grasp on his story and characters, Russell was able to transport me to Lowell, Massachusetts in the early 90s and have me sympathize with people I normally wouldn’t like to spend time with.
Although The Fighter is probably Russell’s best work, I have been a fan since Flirting with Disaster and Three Kings (I have yet to see his directorial debut, Spanking the Monkey). After Three Kings, Russell took it upon himself to tackle the big question. Why? What does it all mean? I could never have expected the way in which he would cover the subject. From 1997 to 2005, Spielberg hit a creative peak and began to dive into darker and more adult themed material starting with Amistad and ending beautifully with Munich. The double feature I will be recommending is two of his best works in his dark run, the extremely underrated sci fi duo, A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Minority Report. A Fond Farewell to Mr. Ledger: Review of “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”

Say what you will about Terry Gilliam; the man is a visionary. He has created some of the most original (if uneven) films of the past 30 years. “Brazil”, “The Fisher King”, and “12 Monkeys” are just a few of his stand outs, in my opinion.
