Enjoy the Academy Awards!
We here at Filmdogs would like to remind everyone to tune in ABC tonight at 8|5p for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards. Hopefully, the broadcast (hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway) will be a fun time full of surprises and upsets. If you would like to leave any comments letting us know what you thought of the show, please feel free to do so. Also, you can bet on us in the pack having plenty to say about the awards. If that interests you in the slightest, here is where you can read our thoughts: Mr. Edens, Mr. Jason, Mr. Will, and Filmdogs.
Score Your Week | Up “Seizing The Spirit of Adventure”
The Oscar winning score from Up has enough great tracks on it to last a few months on Score Your Week, but there’s one track that just gets me on the edge of my seat every time. Read on!
Five things Mr. Jason is thankful for this year in moviedom!
The following is a list of some of the things I’m thankful for this year in cinema and entertainment. Some are cheesy, some are awesome, and some will make you cry. Continue on to check out my list. Read the rest of this entry »
Scene Stealer | “L.A. Confidential” Bud White enters the Interrogation
This is my first time doing Scene Stealer here at Filmdogs and I wanted to make sure my opening was a killer one. As I was thinking about possible scenes, one popped up immediately. The scene is from the 1997 Curtis Hanson film L.A. Confidential, a masterful crime drama set in post-war Los Angeles about seedy Hollywood and corrupt cops.
Money Sleeps Until Fall | Oliver Stone
It was just officially announced that director Oliver Stone’s follow up to his 1987 film Wall Street, entitled Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, will be pushed back from it’s summer release date to September 24th. This usually gets people talking about how horrible the film must be, but there could be numerous reasons that such a thing took place. I think the most obvious reason is 20th Century Fox probably thinks that pitting a drama heavy film against huge blockbusters may not be the way to go. I wouldn’t be surprised if the studio is planning an Oscar campaign for Michael Douglas as well. Douglas has already received an Oscar for his original portrayal of the character, and I’m sure a great many are interested to see what he has to offer a second time around. Under the Radar | Jeff Bridges
This is a new column that will focus on little known films, directors, writers, and actors. The column does not exist to tell you what to watch, but to simply help raise interest in the great art and talent that goes unseen year by year. So let’s begin.
In honor of one of my favorite actors’ recent (and first) oscar win; I will be profiling “The Dude” himself… Jeff Bridges. The following films showcase some of Bridges’ greatest performances, that you may have missed. Read the rest of this entry »
Painfully Brilliant : Oscar Review of “The Hurt Locker”
The psychologically intense Oscar nom, The Hurt Locker, dramatically takes the word “suspense” to a whole new level. The film immediately plunges us into the high-octane world of men who defuse bombs for the Army. The story focuses around a group of three immensely trained troops (Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty) amidst the war in Iraq.
Layovers and Layoffs : Oscar Review of “Up In the Air”
To me “Up In the Air” is the single greatest thematic achievement of 2009. It manages to accomplish what every great film should strive to do; make you look at the characters and their situations, and then look back at yourself. “Up In the Air” is about the modern man. Home is the road. Scratch that. Home is the sky, and as we all know the sky is the limit. Until, you are grounded. Read the rest of this entry »
Give the Oscar to a Cartoon: Oscar Review of “UP”
The first two times I sat down to watch UP I kept getting interrupted by this and that, not getting a good feel for the film as a whole. I just turned off the PS3 after watching it all the way through, and I’ll be at a loss if it doesn’t get best picture this year. Welling up during a cartoon is an extremely rare occasion for me, but it happened almost three times during UP. This isn’t to say if a film makes you cry that it deserves an Oscar, but there’s a certain amount of undeniable brilliance that shines through with this Pixar masterpiece.
