“Where do you think Gil goes every night?” Review: Midnight in Paris

I feel a little strange reviewing Woody Allen‘s latest picture, Midnight In Paris, as Filmdogs own Mr. Jason is the site’s go-to Allen expert. (I believe he’s seen nearly all his films…a huge feat) However, I was lucky enough to be in one of the few cities in the country showing the movie this weekend, and couldn’t turn down the opportunity to check it out. While I haven’t seen much of the director’s work I always find myself enjoying as least some aspect of each new picture, even the ones that fail to connect with critics. That said Midnight in Paris is the best film I’ve seen this year, a delightful comedy focusing on the nature of nostalgia and many of the director’s more famous themes.

Michael Cera’s Favorite Films

Here at Filmdogs, we have a bit of a love hate relationship with Michael Cera. Although he has proven to filmgoers that he has talent, the jury still seems to be out on his cinematic range. I, for one, thought he was very good in Arrested Development, Superbad, and Youth and Revolt, while also acknowledging that he was completely underwhelming and unfunny in both Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist and Year One. That said, one thing that Filmdogs definitely agrees on is that Cera brought his “A” game and more to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Well, now we can get a look at some of the films that inspire Michael Cera, and I must say he has good taste. Intervals of Awesome originally posted the list which features some Kurosawa, Scorsese, and Anderson (Wes and P.T.). Continue on to check out the list.

Double Wide Trailer Exam | “How Do You Know” and “Daydream Nation”

Paul Rudd in How Do You Know and Kat Dennings in Daydream Nation

How Do You Know is the new film by James L. Brooks, and I must say I am only mildly interested in it judging by this trailer. Brooks has some really great films (Broadcast News, As Good as it Gets, Spanglish), but they all had a little more to offer than your average rom com. How Do You Know seems to be treading some familiar water, but it does have a great cast and maybe Brooks isn’t showing us everything. The film stars Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson, Jack Nicholson and opens December 17, 2010.

Daydream Nation is an independent film that is premiering at the Toronto Film Festival and though I know next to nothing about the film, I must say the trailer is extremely enticing. It is filled with smash cuts and great music, but it also hides behind them. This could go either way because it is no secret that a trailer can make a bad movie look good; all it has to do is showcase great editing and music. Regardless of how the film turns out, the trailer for Daydream Nation is still worth checking out. Continue on to do so. Read the rest of this entry »
