Filmdogs Interview | Oscar Nominated Writer/Director Luke Matheny talks about his short “God of Love”

Writer/Director Luke Matheny has had a pretty good year. Not only did he graduate from NYU’s prestigious film program, but his thesis film God of Love won the Student Academy Award last May. The good tidings don’t stop there however, as winning that award led his film receiving an Academy Award nomination this year in the live action short category. Word on the street is that he has a  pretty good shot at taking home that statue as well…A few days ago I had the opportunity to talk to Luke the movie, which concerns the romantic misadventures of a lounge singer turned cupid, and discuss what it’s like to be an Oscar Nominee.

Your Poster is Cool | Peter Weir’s “The Way Back”

Peter Weir's "The Way Back."

Readers of this site know I’m a huge fan of director Peter Weir, so naturally I’m excited to see anything to do with his upcoming epic film, The Way Back. Described as “a fact-based story centered on soldiers who escaped from a Siberian gulag in 1940,” it feels exactly like the kind of sweeping material that only Mr. Weir can handle. Check out the Trailer and poster below to see for yourself. Read the rest of this entry »

Score Your Week | The Truman Show

As fans of The Filmdogs Podcast know I’m a huge fan of  the soundtrack to Peter Weir’s 1998 film The Truman Show. The soundtrack features the strange yet effective collaboration of Australian TV composer Burkhard Dallwitz, and the extremely well known Phillip Glass. Both men bring the best of their sensibilities to the emotional score, which at times sounds like the best TV music you’ve ever heard. What at first seems over the top ends up working perfectly with the situations Truman finds himself in.

First Trailer for Peter Weir’s “The Way Back”

Director Peter Weir is my favorite filmmaker. From Witness and Dead Poets Society to The Truman Show and Master and Commander, his films never fail to emotionally resonate with an audience. It pains me that the man doesn’t make more movies, as today’s shaky cam hippster filmmakers could learn a thing or too from his classical style. When his 2005 project Shantaram starring Johnny Depp fell through I went into a fit of despair wondering when his next film would arrive. The good news is his latest picture The Way Back is on track for release late this year, and just in time for an Oscar campaign. Here’s the synopsis: Read the rest of this entry »

Under the Radar | Jeff Bridges

This is a new column that will focus on little known films, directors, writers, and actors. The column does not exist to tell you what to watch, but to simply help raise interest in the great art and talent that goes unseen year by year. So let’s begin.

In honor of one of my favorite actors’ recent (and first) oscar win; I will be profiling “The Dude” himself… Jeff Bridges. The following films showcase some of Bridges’ greatest performances, that you may have missed. Read the rest of this entry »
