The real “Machete” trailer

For those that saw Grindhouse in theaters you know that the weakest faux trailer attached to the films was Robert Rodriguez’s Machete. So, when I heard that Rodriguez wanted to create a feature length film around the character I rolled my eyes. It’s seems to me that the character is a one note joke, not something that warranted a movie. I’d much rather him go ahead with Sin City 2 than waste his time, but then again I’ve never been a big fan of his anyway.

With that said the trailer for the feature length Machete has hit the web and it seems to take itself a little too seriously. It does have a rather large cast however, and I doubt the product will be anything less than fun. Hopefully. Check it out thanks to IGN below. Read the rest of this entry »

The Grindhouse Double Feature finally coming to DVD/Blu-Ray?

The theatrical experience of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse was one of the best times I’ve ever had at the movies. Dispite what you think of both QT’s Death Proof and Rodriguez’s Planet Terror I can assure you that seeing both films at a midnight showing full of my fellow film nerds was a ton of fun. Yet, my experience was never complete because the large coke I was drinking backfired on me, causing me to miss most of the trailers in between the features. For those that don’t know these faux previews were directed by the likes of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World‘s Edgar Wright, Hostel’s Eli Roth, The Devil Rejects‘ Rob Zombie. The Funny Watchmen | Review: “Kick-Ass”

The fanboy community had been buzzing for months in anticipation for Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of comic god Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass. The film looked to be a violent and harshly funny take on the superhero genre. Something that could be a welcome release from the typical comic book fare we’ve been getting in theaters lately. I hoped the film would live up to the hype, and the good news is, it just plain kicked it’s ass. Read the rest of this entry »

The Filmdogs Podcast: Episode 6 – Podcast Balboa

The sixth episode of The Filmdogs Podcast is here and it’s our zaniest yet. We give our final thoughts on this years slightly underwhelming Oscars, and talk about the possibility of Bill and Ted 3 in the news. It’s a Grindhouse double feature in Vs. as we pit Planet Terror and Death Proof against one another. Our featured topic of the week…A@%hole directors and actors. Then we have an absolute classic one liner of the week from an old Bogart film. No animals were harmed in the making of this podcast, however we did tend to swear a little more than usual. It’s Michael Bay and Brett Ratner’s fault.

Across the Pond | France’s: Le samouraï

When people think of foreign films they often simply pass them off as being too pretentious and experimental for their liking. Yet, one of the things I’ve discovered about films from oversees is how their main influence is often American. Which makes sense when you think about it, Hollywood is in the U.S. after all. Such is the case with director Jean-Pierre Melville and his 1967 hitman masterpiece Le samouraï. Read the rest of this entry »

Oscar Winners

Overall, this years awards went down as expected and were kind of bland. I kept hoping for an upset, but the biggest one I got was Geoffrey Fletcher winning Best Adapated Screeplay for Precious over Jason Reitman’s script for Up in the Air. It was cool seeing Kathryn Bigelow become the first woman to win in the directing category. Dito, as for seeing “The Dude” himself, Jeff Bridges, win for Crazy Heart. The Hurt Locker had a big night sweeping all the major awards including Best Picture. For me though the best part of the entire show was the cutting of the Best Original Song performances from the telecast. Here’s hoping that change is here to stay. See all the winners below in bold.

Tarantino’s Masterpiece: Oscar Review of “Inglourious Basterds”

If there was ever a director who knew how to make hyperbolic statements concerning his own work and upcoming projects it is Quentin Tarantino. Rumors of the semi-sequel to his early films’ “Pulp Fiction” and “Reservoir Dogs” titled “The Vega Brothers” have been talked up for years. So naturally when Tarantino said he had an idea for the WWII movie to end all WWII movies I simply rolled my eyes. Now don’t get me wrong, I wanted to see that movie in a bad way. I may have even thought of kidnapping him at one point, and forcing him to write the script, but thats neither here nor there… Read the rest of this entry »

Censored! The Best movie Dub-Overs of All Time.

So I was watching the Coen Brothers’ cult classic “The Big Lewboski” the other day, and as a crazed Walter beat the living crap out of the car I couldn’t help but remember the way this film was famously censored for television. The Coen’s in their infinite wisdom had John Goodman himself re-dub his classic scene for TV and the result is well…brilliant. Read the rest of this entry »
