Pixar is indeed in the Sequel Business

A new trailer for “Toy Story 3″ has debuted today on myspace of all places and it looks, well…just ok. Something about this sequel feels more like a “Shrek” film than a pixar classic. Which makes me very afraid for the future of the stellar company. Plans for a sequel to the stuido’s most lackluster effort “Cars” are in the works as well as “Monsters Inc. 2.” All this comes after Disney animation head John Lasseter famously stated a few years ago that “Pixar is not in the Sequel Business.” Oh how I wish that were true. Over the years, DreamWorks Animation has become an industry benchmark by consistently bringing top notch and wildly successful computer animated films to the big screen with the likes of Kung Fu Panda, Shrek, Madagascar, Shark Tale and more recently Monster’s vs. Aliens. How to Train Your Dragon is not an exception to this quality standard and effortlessly holds its own among the computer animated elite.
