In the Spotlight/Under the Radar – Eric Bana

Bana and Saoirse Ronan in "Hanna"

Joe Wright’s Hanna seems to be the movie to see this weekend for several reasons, one of which is the criminally under-cast Australian actor Eric Bana. The chance to see him in what people are calling the best action sequence of 2011 has got my blood up, especially given the fact that Wright filmed it all in one long take. (His idea of rebelling against the Bourne shakycam syndrome) Having seen Bana in several action oriented roles in his decade long film career I’m sure he can handle anything that’s thrown at him. Yet, what makes him truly fascinating to watch as an actor is the way he balances this with a quiet sensitivity that sucks you into his character’s world. I’m primarily thinking of Steven Spielberg’s Munich (in which he was robbed of an Oscar nomination) but that’s ok because it led to his being the catalyst for the hit Judd Apatow movie Knocked Up

The Lost World: Jurassic Park “Team InGen Arrives”

This Monday marked the passing of great character actor Pete Postlehwaite, and while many remember him from his work on the stage or in films like In the Name of the Father, most from my generation may think of him as one of the best aspects of Steven Spielberg’s lukewarm sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park. The film itself has it’s moments including more snappy dialogue from Jeff Goldblum, another riveting “T-Rex in the rain” sequence, and the off-island third act…Just kidding about that last one.

Pete Postlethwaite (1946-2011)

Oscar nominated British actor Pete Postlethwaite died yesterday at the age of 64 from Cancer.  Pete gained international fame from his starring role in The Usual Suspects, while gaining a great amount of respect from his peers, being referred to by director Steven Spielberg as “the greatest actor in the world”.  Pete’s work includes: Solomon Kane, Inception, the Town, the Age of Stupid, In the Name of the Father, the Constant Gardener, Amistad, the Last of the Mohicans and Alien 3 among many others.  Our thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of Pete.  You will be missed.

Get Your Docs On | “Waking Sleeping Beauty’

Focusing on the Disney animation comeback of the late 80s an early 90s Waking Sleeping Beauty is a documentary that any fan of the studio will surly find fascinating. It features corporate restructurings, creative differences, and several huge egos getting in the way. It’s a wonder any of the classic films got made at all.

Cinematic TV | Review of Boardwalk Empire Episode 1.1

Boardwalk Empire is not Martin Scorsese’s first foray into episodic television (he previously directed a campy/creepy episode of Spielberg’s 1985 series Amazing Stories entitled, “Mirror, Mirror”), but it is the first time he is able to put his cinematic stamp on a show. Teaming up with HBO and show runner Terence Winter, Scorsese introduces us to the world of 1920s Atlantic City. A land of gangsters, jazz, and prohibition. Judging by this first episode, I feel that Boardwalk Empire may have the ability to do the impossible and rank with HBO greats, The Sopranos and Deadwood. Read the rest of this entry »
