Geek Round Up | A Pixar great headed out for an Impossible Mission

Bird with his second Oscar for "Ratatouille"

geek
Slang.
1. A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest.

2. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.

3. A carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

Geek Round Up is a Filmdogs column celebrating the best geeky filmic news. Basically anything that incites us geeks to push our glasses up the bridge of our nose, and lean closer to our computer screens with excitement. So, let’s do just that.

Brad Bird is one of my favorite directors. Period. His films The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille transcend animation in such a way that the word “cartoon” never enters your mind. Now, it seems as if the director is finally taking the leap into the live action world. According to Vulture Bird is in final talks to helm the fourth installment in one of the most diverse franchises in existence. The Mission Impossible series.

Top 10 “Love” Films

In lieu of Valentine’s Day and all its commercialism, I decided to start my Filmdogs career with a top ten list. This list pertains to movies I feel show love at its true core.  A love film to me isn’t the romantic comedy that Hollywood loves shoveling out. Love exists in numerous different ways, be it a father dying from cancer trying to connect with his son, a lonely figure longing for something he’s unsure of, sharing a passion for music, or that one and only someone you know you can’t live without. It’s a special bond and experience you share with another being. This list is comprised of those films which “I” feel showcases that fact. If you have the chance, I highly recommend you go rent one of these movies and watch them tonight with your special someone. So without further ado, here is my “Love” Film Top 10:

Give the Oscar to a Cartoon: Oscar Review of “UP”

The first two times I sat down to watch UP I kept getting interrupted by this and that, not getting a good feel for the film as a whole. I just turned off the PS3 after watching it all the way through, and I’ll be at a loss if it doesn’t get best picture this year. Welling up during a cartoon is an extremely rare occasion for me, but it happened almost three times during UP. This isn’t to say if a film makes you cry that it deserves an Oscar, but there’s a certain amount of undeniable brilliance that shines through with this Pixar masterpiece.

Pixar is indeed in the Sequel Business

A new trailer for “Toy Story 3″ has debuted today on myspace of all places and it looks, well…just ok. Something about this sequel feels more like a “Shrek” film than a pixar classic. Which makes me very afraid for the future of the stellar company. Plans for a sequel to the stuido’s most lackluster effort “Cars” are in the works as well as “Monsters Inc. 2.” All this comes after Disney animation head John Lasseter famously stated a few years ago that “Pixar is not in the Sequel Business.” Oh how I wish that were true. My top 50 films of the past decade

I’ll always look back on this past decade in film as the one in which I as a film junkie plunged head first into the world of cinema. In 2000 “Gladiator” became the blueprint to which all other films in the following decade would have to live up too. Granted I was 16 at the time and could only hope to live a life interesting as Maximus. (more…)
